Let’s build on what we discussed last time.
When a new regulation is published, most companies immediately ask: “What do we need to change?”
It sounds like the right question. But it isn’t the first one you should be asking.
The better question is: “Are we structurally ready for what this regulation assumes we can already do?”
What the Regulation Assumes?
The new EU Detergents Regulation assumes that companies can:
- Provide structured digital product information.
- Clearly define regulatory responsibilities across the supply chain.
- Deliver transparent ingredients and compliance data quickly.
- Respond efficiently to market surveillance authorities.
On paper, that doesn’t sound dramatic.
In practice, it can expose how organized or disorganized your internal systems really are.
From Documents to Data
For years, compliance largely meant producing documents. PDFs. Labels. Safety Instructions. Files stored somewhere safe.
This regulation is different. It moves us from document-based compliance to data-based compliance. Structured data. Digitally accessible information. Clear traceability.
If the PCN experience taught us anything, it’s this: good intentions are not enough. You need clean, structured data. Let’s look at a simple case that will help put things into perspective.
Imagine you have 120 detergent products in your portfolio. Different formulations. Different markets. Different suppliers.
Now imagine each one requires structured digital compliance information. How quickly are you able to meet all four points of the new EU Detergents Regulation I stated above? If you paused for thinking after reading this then this is a clear sign to act.
Action Point
I would suggest you start having a short internal conversation this week or as soon as possible. Simply start by asking yourself or your team the following question:
“If we had to generate structured compliance data per detergent tomorrow, how would we do it?”
You don’t have to try to solve it immediately. But you need to start (my modest opinion). And you can do that by just listening carefully to the answer.
That answer will tell you far more about your readiness than any deadline ever will.
In the next article, we’ll compare the old and new Regulations side by side. In that way you’ll see clearly what has changed and where to focus first.
Again, if you find yourself short with time you can share your challenges with me.
