What labeling elements must a label contain?
Are there any rules to consider when it comes to label placement?
These questions might seem trivial, but they come up often in practice, so I've decided to address them.
The answers to these questions lie in the regulations on the classification and labeling of chemicals.
Let's first look at the labeling elements that a label must include.
Packaging of a substance or mixture classified as hazardous must be labeled with the following elements:
- name, address, and phone number of the supplier;
- nominal quantity of the substance or mixture in packaging intended for general use, unless this quantity is indicated elsewhere on the packaging;
- product identifiers (details that allow identification of the substance or mixture);
- hazard pictograms;
- warning word, if applicable;
- hazard statements, if applicable;
- precautionary statements, if applicable;
- additional information, if applicable.
This becomes clearer when shown graphically. That's why I've included a label with all the labeling elements we've mentioned.
Now let's look at the rules for label placement:
- The label must be firmly attached to one or more surfaces of the packaging in which the substance or mixture is directly contained, so that the information can be read horizontally when the package is laid in its usual position.
- The color and appearance of the label must ensure that the hazard pictogram stands out clearly from the rest of the label.
- Labeling elements must be clearly and indelibly displayed on the label, standing out against the background, and must be of such size and spacing that they can be easily read.
- The shape, color, and size of the hazard pictograms, as well as the dimensions of the label, must comply with the regulations on classification and labeling.
- A label is not required if the labeling elements are clearly displayed on the packaging itself.
I hope you find this information useful.
