We recently received a rather unusual request from a potential customer.

Instead of the standard request, they sent us a detailed list of 5 very specific questions—questions we often hear informally in practice but rarely see written out so clearly.

These questions reflect today’s reality. Companies are becoming increasingly concerned about whether their safety data sheets are truly compliant, up-to-date, and sufficient enough to withstand scrutiny from authorities or demanding customers.

Below is a summary of the key questions every company placing chemicals on the EU market should be asking themselves or their chemical consultants—together with answers that will help you assess whether your safety data sheet is organised the way it should be.

  1. Is the safety data sheet compliant with the latest EU REACH and CLP requirements?

The most frequently asked question is also the most crucial.

“Is the safety data sheet prepared in accordance with EU Regulation no. 2020/878 and the currently applicable REACH and CLP requirements?”

Yes. All safety data sheets we prepare follow the latest regulatory requirements, including Regulation no. 2020/878, and are fully compliant with the REACH Regulation (EC) No. 1907/2006 and the CLP Regulation (EC) No. 1272/2008. Regulation no. 2020/878 is clearly indicated in Section 15 of every safety data sheet.

This means the document is prepared fully in line with current legislation and is ready for any inspection.

   2. Emergency telephone numbers – are they included correctly?

A simple question that often causes unnecessary confusion.

“Does the safety data sheet include the official national emergency telephone numbers?”

Yes. We include emergency telephone numbers in every safety data sheet, exactly as specified by the competent authority in each country.

And then there is Germany. This is an exception: using the official German emergency number requires a special agreement with their poison control centre. This is important to know before providing the document to a customer in Germany.

     3. Who prepares safety data sheets?

A question we rarely hear — yet one of the most important.

“Are the consultants that prepare the safety data sheet professionally qualified?”

All members of our team hold a chemicals consultant licence issued by the Chemicals Bureu of the Republic of Slovenia. This includes regular training, mandatory knowledge assessments, and an in-depth understanding of the legislation, the REACH and CLP Regulations, and all related requirements.

A properly qualified team means fewer risks for you.

    4. How often are safety data sheets updated?

A safety data sheet is not a document you prepare once and then forget about. Legislation changes, substance classifications evolve, and UFI or PCN requirements must follow those updates.

That is why this is such an important question.

“Do you provide updates when changes occur?”

Yes. As part of the Chemius Expert service, we not only prepare the safety data sheet but also update it regularly in line with legislative changes. This ensures that your documents are always up to date and allows you to focus on other challenges with confidence.

    5. Would a safety data sheet pass inspection?

If you find yourself asking these questions, you are not alone. Safety data sheets are among the most frequently mis-prepared documents in the chemical industry, yet they form the foundation for the lawful marketing of chemicals in the EU.

If you want to verify your existing documents or need new, fully compliant safety data sheets, we can help.

When a safety data sheet is prepared correctly, your work becomes easier — and your business becomes safer.
