We often get asked the same question:
“Can you help us create a Safety Data Sheet?”
The answer is yes, however, the path we choose to take depends on what you already have and what you need. There are two common scenarios:
- Creating an SDS from a product formulation
If you have a formulation (the full composition of your product) but no SDS yet, we can create a brand-new, compliant Safety Data Sheet based on your formulation.
Here’s what we need from you in a nutshell:
- Substance name
- CAS number
- EC number
- REACH registration number (if available)
- Classification of the substance according to CLP/GHS
- Exact concentration (w/w%) of each substance in the mixture
This ensures the product is classified and labeled correctly according to the CLP Regulation (EC No 1272/2008) and aligned with REACH Article 31 requirements.
Let’s look at Ethanol as an example:
|
Substance name |
CAS number |
EC number |
REACH number |
Classification (CLP/GHS) |
% in product |
|
Ethanol |
64-17-5 |
Flammable liquid, cat. 2 |
XX% |
||
|
… |
… |
… |
… |
… |
… |
With this data, we can prepare an SDS that meets Italian, Spanish, German or any other local European legislation.
Now, let’s focus on another very frequent request we get.
- Adjusting or updating an existing SDS
Sometimes, companies already have an SDS—maybe even in another language—but it doesn’t fully comply with local regulations.
For example: a German SDS may need to be updated to reflect the latest CLP labelling or to include missing substances that appear on the product label but not in the SDS.
While this might look like an easier task than in the first case it’s not. We still need the full composition details (not just what’s written in the old SDS) to check the classification and ensure everything is correct and compliant.
Why does full information matter?
Here’s another recent example: A client sent us an SDS that only listed ethanol. But the product label clearly showed additional hazardous ingredients. Without this information, we cannot prepare a legally compliant SDS, because classification and labeling must cover all substances present.
That’s why we always ask for the full composition—it’s the only way to guarantee compliance.
If you find yourself nodding, then it might help if I tell you…
How to Get Started
- If you have a formulation → we can create a new SDS from scratch.
- If you have an old SDS → we can adapt it, but we’ll still need the full composition to make sure it’s correct.
Once we have this, we can prepare an SDS for Germany (and other EU countries) that meets REACH and CLP requirements.
