If you sell hazardous chemical mixtures in the EU, mark January 2025 on your calendar.
That’s when ECHA will kick off a major inspection campaign to see if companies are following the rules for notifying poison centers. These inspections will last six months and could have serious consequences for anyone who’s not prepared.
The Deadline You Can't Ignore
As of 2024, all companies must use the EU’s standardized format for submitting information about hazardous mixtures. Here’s a quick September’s overview of member states' decisions related to PCN acceptance.
But just because you've done it once doesn’t mean you're safe. Any tweaks to your product’s formula or even its ID will require a new submission—and these inspections will be checking whether you’ve kept up with these changes.
ECHA will be focusing on labels, Safety Data Sheets (SDS), and the correct use of the Unique Formula Identifier (UFI). If you’re missing any of these, expect trouble. Better to take the time now and make sure your products are up to date before the inspectors come knocking.
Heads Up: Why This Matters
Get it wrong, and you could face penalties or, worse, lose your ability to sell your product in the EU. Sounds scary? It should. But don’t panic just yet. We can help. Whether you still need to do PCNs or ensure your labels are correct, we’ve got your back. Reach out to us, and let’s get it sorted.
A Final Note
According to Article 45 of the CLP Regulation, you must provide full details about hazardous mixtures to poison centers. If you're outside the EU, there's a workaround: appoint an EU representative and use a Unique Formula Identifier (UFI) to protect your product’s secret ingredients.
