You've probably come across a shampoo or shower gel with ingredients you couldn't pronounce. You probably asked yourself then, what are these ingredients anyway? Are these ingredients safe for the body? Or are they chemicals that are added in such low concentrations that they do their job without harming the skin?
How is the control of cosmetic products regulated, and when can a cosmetic product become a hazardous chemical and thus fall under chemical regulation? When does a cosmetic product need a safety data sheet?
For cosmetic products intended for the end user (consumer) in their final form, such as shampoos, shower gels and body lotions, it is not necessary to provide SDSs.
The requirements for safety data sheets listed in Article 31 of the REACH Regulation exclude cosmetic products by name from the stated requirements.
So, if we answer the question: When does a cosmetic product need a safety data sheet? Cosmetic products do not need a safety data sheet.
However, hazardous substances or mixtures that are offered or sold to the public are provided with sufficient information to enable users to take all necessary measures regarding the protection of human health, safety and the environment, unless requested by the downstream user or distributor.
