On July 14, 2023, the European Chemicals Agency announced an amendment to Annex XVII of Regulation (EC) No. 1907/2006 concerning formaldehyde and formaldehyde releasers.
The new entry under number 77 introduces restrictions and prohibitions on the release of formaldehyde from various products such as wooden panels, furniture, flooring, wallpapers, foams, parts of road vehicles and aircraft, as well as textile and leather products. The purpose of this regulation is to protect human health and the environment from potential harmful effects of formaldehyde.
It is essential to emphasize that Commission Regulation (EU) 2023/1464 also establishes two transitional periods for implementing the restrictions:
- The transitional period for products is set until August 2026.
- The transitional period for road vehicles is set until August 2027.
These transitional periods allow the industry time to adjust their manufacturing processes and products to comply with the new limits on formaldehyde content.
Compliance with the new regulation is crucial to ensure consumer safety and promote sustainable and responsible chemical management in the industry.
